Spring, as some would describe it, received a second chance to declare itself in the capital Saturday and proved to be extremely wet. It was the rainiest day here since mid-February.

In its daily summary of conditions in Washington, the National Weather Service seemed to call the roll of almost all the ways of being wet. Fog, light rain, rain and heavy rain were all in attendance.

The result was one of this young year’s damper days. It provided hours of drops and droplets, draping a gray curtain across the blurred landscape.

As it shielded distant objects from view and dimmed the light of day, the falling rain facilitated Saturday morning somnolence.

It amounted to an official 0.73 inches as of 4 p.m. That was the most here since the 0.74 inches on Feb. 13. It was third wettest since Jan. 9.

When added to Friday night’s officially recorded 0.04 inches, the Saturday figure made it possible to call March a moist month. So far.

And a gray one. Friday had many gray hours, but on Saturday it seemed that gray hours were Washington’s only hours.

Close observation of the sky showed a few patches of blue here and there. Bright and welcome as they may have been, they seemed nothing more than small holes poked in a broad gray blanket.

In assigning Saturday to its proper season, spring seemed a possibility.

For meteorologists, the three months of spring began on March 1.

In addition, Saturday was warmer than Friday, a possible sign of thermal progress. Friday’s official high temperature was 54. Just before 5 p.m. on Saturday, the temperature had reached 55.

Meanwhile at the Tidal Basin, the process of blooming of Washington’s famed cherry blossom trees has started, according to the National Park Service.

“And we’re off!” the National Mall division of the Park Service posted Saturday on the social media site X. “Small green buds are appearing.” That’s the first of six stages on the way to peak bloom, the tweet said. NPS expects peak bloom from March 23 to March 26.
